Super Starbase version 0.2.2
Hey guys! It's been quite awhile since I've uploaded any updates for Super Starbase. This is because I was busy finishing up my degree in Computer Science. And now that's done! Yay! Unemployment! This is a pretty big foundational update, as I've changed a lot of core systems to greater support my vision for the final game's progression structure. Some key changes are these:
- Crafting recipes must now be learned. You can learn crafting recipes by collecting new resources or specific items. This should incentivize exploration as a way of learning new things. Learned recipes can be viewed in the crafting menu.
- During wave defense scenarios, enemies can become Wave Wraiths under certain conditions, which pose a significant threat to your defense objective and incentivize certain building styles. Currently, the Grasslands Soul Pillar will create Wave Wraiths out of enemies that are directly underneath the pillar. Doors can also be broken-in by enemies and repaired by the player.
- Leveling up has been replaced by Mana. I felt that a traditional level-based character progression structure was antithetical to my goals of creating a game that incentivizes equipment synergy and character building. Basically, it overcomplicates the game balance! Currently, the goal is to incentivize the player to try out lots of different gear. Instead of increasing your stats, gear will mostly be used to supply Enchantments to your build. Enchantment synergies are going to be the primary way of gaining character strength in Super Starbase, and so the player is heavily incentivized to be trying out lots of different gear combinations all the time. This is where Mana comes into play. To activate an Enchantment, a Mana cost must be paid. I will use this mechanic to nerf highly effective synergies unless the player can figure out a way to pay for them, and also I will incentivize exploration by allowing the player to increase their maximum Mana by killing certain enemies or other.. Should be great fun for nerds!
- New gear set added: Bubble Armor, New material added: Soap Stone
- Lots of bug fixes. Herobrine removed.
Now that I'm in the swing of things, updates are going to start coming a LOT faster. I have a really strong vision for the gameplay loop, so over the next few weeks expect to see some pretty radical changes to this game! If that interests you, consider joining the discord server:
